Strawbridge Acquires New Zealand Star Habibi

New Zealand Derby (NZ-I) winner will be pointed to Breeders' Cup World Championships.

George Strawbridge Jr.'s Augustin Stables has privately acquired New Zealand standout filly Habibi, who defeated males in this year's TV3 New Zealand Derby (NZ-I), from her owner-breeders Peter and Heather Crofskey, and owners Gavin Crofskey and Pam McIntyre.

New Zealand's Waikato Times reports the New Zealand-based owners will retain a minority interest in the three-time group stakes winner. The story said the daughter of Ekraar will be shipped to the U.S. Sat., April 27, with plans to prepare for the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

"We feel really good about Augustin Stables," Heather Crofskey told Waikato Times. "They are very reputable people who care about horses as much as (trainer Donna Logan) and we do. There were conditions to go with it, like that she would always race on turf and that we'd be a part of it.

"It's given her an awesome opportunity and that's how we feel about it. It was a tough decision because we have such a personal attachment to her. It's a bittersweet day."
