Kentucky Oaks Winner Dispute Dies at Age 23

Daughter of Danzig won or placed in 17 of 19 career starts and earned $1,106,907.

Dispute, winner of the 1993 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) for owner-breeder Ogden Mills Phipps and trainer Shug McGaughey, was euthanized April 24 at Pattons Creek Farm near Goshen, Ky., due to the effects of a neurological problem.

The daughter of Danzig produced from the stakes-winning Reviewer mare Resolver was 23 and had been owned by Pattons Creek since being purchased at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February sale.

Dispute won or placed in 17 of 19 career starts and earned $1,106,907. In addition to the Oaks, she won the Gazelle Handicap (gr. I) and Bonnie Miss Stakes (gr. II) in 1993 and the following year accounted for the Spinster Stakes (gr. I). Also in 1993, Dispute's victory in the Beldame Stakes (gr. I) was one of an unprecedented five stakes wins for McGaughey on the Oct. 16 Breeders' Cup preview day card at Belmont Park.

On behalf of Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps and Stuart Janney, McGaughey will saddle Orb  as one of the favorites in this year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).

Dispute was a full sister to grade I winner Adjudicating and a half sister to grade I winner Time for a Change and stakes winner Tax Collection.

As a broodmare, Dispute produced 14 foals, resulting in seven starters and five winners. Her  progeny earned a total of $286,108.
