Aubby K Splashes to Humana Distaff Victory

James Spence homebred stalks and strikes to take grade I on sloppy Churchill strip.

Aubby K tracked the pace set by Jamaican Smoke, then pulled away down the lane to take the $345,600 Humana Distaff (gr. I) on the Kentucky Derby Day undercard May 4 at Churchill Downs (VIDEO).

The 4-year-old daughter of Street Sense  completed the seven-furlong course in 1:22.93 over a sloppy, sealed track, for her first grade I score. Burban finished second, 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner with Holiday Soiree coming from off the pace to grab third, a neck behind Burban.

Racing as a homebred for James Spence, Aubby K was coming off a three-length score in the Inside Information Stakes (gr. II) over seven furlongs at Gulfstream Park March 17. She has now won half of her eight starts and earned $419,224.

Ralph Nicks conditions the winner, who was ridden to victory by Hall of Famer Edgar Prado. Aubby K is out of the Capote mareLilly Capote.

Jamaican Smoke grabbed the early lead from her inside post, opening up a 2 1/2-length advantage after an opening quarter mile in :22.40. Aubby K tracked from second with Burban also forwardly placed. Jamaican Smoke maintained her advantage after running a half mile in :45.31, but Prado was cutting into that lead with Aubby K outside the leader.
On the bend for home, Aubby K ranged menacingly up alongside Jamaican Smoke and drove to the front coming into the stretch, getting six furlongs in 1:09.60 while a length clear at the furlong pole. Burban and Jose Lezcano threatened on the outside but Aubby K found another gear and repelled that challenge, hitting the wire comfortably in front. Aubby K was made the favorite in the last click of odds, going off at 7/2.
"She handled the track really well," noted Prado. "The filly’s got a great running style. She’s great out of the gate and you put her in contention and she does her thing."
Said Nicks, "She’s such a good horse. She just keeps overcoming everything. She’s a terrific stalker and has the turn of foot she needs."
Aubby K paid $9.20, $5.40, and $4, topping an exacta worth $95.60 with Burban, who returned $8.60 and $6.20. Holiday Soiree paid $8 to show.
The complete order of finish after those three was Jamaican Smoke, Rumor, Byrama, Emma's Encore, There Is No Limit, and Same Cross.
