A daughter of Dixie Chatter breezed a quarter-mile in :21, and 11 other 2-year-olds went a furlong in :10 at the May 10 under tack preview for the Barretts May 2-year-old sale in Pomona, Calif.
"The track has been consistent all day and has played fair," said Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts Equine Limited. "We've had a good turnout and a lot of buyer interest."
The May 13 sale offers a catalog of 142, with another 13 as part of a supplemental catalog.
While most of the horses previewed a furlong, 11 went a quarter-mile, with the Dixie Chatter filly the fastest of the latter group. Consigned by Andy Havens' Havens Bloodstock Agency Inc., the California-bred filly, named Sizzlin' Dixie and cataloged as Hip 93, is from the first crop of California sire Dixie Chatter out of the stakes-winning Desert God mare Sonora Desert.
Five horses breezed three furlongs, with another Caiformia-bred, Hip 35 getting the fastest time at that distance of :33 4/5. Callaway Thoroughbreds offers the filly, a daughter of Tribal Rule–Justanotherblonde, by Bertrando. Justanotherblonde has also produced two stakes-placed horses.
The 11 horses that clocked the fastest furlongs in :10 came from eight different consignments. They included eight colts and three fillies, with six of them Kentucky-breds, three California-breds, one Florida-bred, and one Maryland-bred. The sires represented are Benny the Bull , Bernstein, Desert Code, Into Mischief , Latent Heat, Not for Love, Roman Ruler, Singletary, Tale of the Cat , Tiz Wonderful, and Tribal Rule.
Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables Inc., often a leading consignor at Barretts 2-year-old sales, had three youngsters preview in :10, including the lone Maryland-bred, Hip 65. Named Rocket Ridge, the colt is by Not for Love–Polo Ridge, by Wild Rush.
Kim McCarthy's McCarthy Bloodstock Agency sent two California-bred fillies out in :10. Single Noproblema, Hip 101, is by Singletary–Tiz a Problem, by Cee's Tizzy. Single Noproblema's second dam, graded-stakes winner Soviet Problem, was the 1994 California-bred Horse of the Year. Too Obvious, Hip 86, is by Desert Code–Secret Mountain, by Mt. Livermore.
Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds breezed Hip 41 in :10. The Kentucky-bred colt is by Tale of the Cat–La Danielle, by Danehill, from the family of English Broodmare of the Year Hasili. The colt was a $290,000 buyback at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. March select 2-year-old sale.
Becky Thomas' Sequel Bloodstock, another regular consignor to the Barretts 2-year-old sales, had two breeze in :10 1/5. Hip 32 is the only horse by Malibu Moon in the sale.
The colt is out of the graded stakes-winning Precocity mare Jill Robin L. Malibu Moon is the sire of Orb , who won this year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
Hip 72 is the only horse by Street Cry in the sale, and the colt is a half-brother to Horse of the Year Invasor.
Thomas is one of several Florida-based consignors who bring horses to Barretts.
"There is a buyer base here that is unique to any other sale," Thomas said. "There are people who enjoy being able to buy out of their backyard and have their clients come over and look."
