Belmont Park Seals Track

Officials prepare for expected heavy rain in advance off Belmont Stakes day June 8.

In anticipation of heavy rain in the area beginning the night of June 6, Belmont Park track maintenance personnel rolled and sealed the main track after the Thursday races.

According to the National Weather Service, rain is expected to begin Thursday night and there is a 90% chance of rain during the day June 7 in Elmont, N.Y. Rainfall could exceed one inch. Further rain is expected Friday night, with forecasts calling for one to two inches of rainfall in what is expected to be the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea.

New York Racing Association officials plan to monitor the rainfall and adjust to the weather.

"We will use the same procedure as with any other major rain event that is anticipated," said Glen Kozak, NYRA vice president of facilities and racing surfaces, early in the day June 6. "We'll roll and seal the track after the races today in anticipation of heavy rains.

"What we actually get in terms of rainfall will determine how we manage the track on Friday with respect to training and other preparations."
