D'cajun Cat Set to Pounce in Bashford Manor

Field also includes impressive Keeneland debut winner Hollywood Talent.

After impressively winning his debut June 1 at Churchill Downs, D'cajun Cat will try to make it 2-for-2 under the Twin Spires when he faces six other juveniles in the $100,000 Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III) June 29.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, who through June 26 had won seven 2-year-old races at the current Churchill meet, D'cajun Cat will stretch out to six furlongs for his stakes debut after the D'wildcat colt rolled to a 5 1/4-length victory in his maiden special weight debut June 1 on a sloppy Churchill main track.

Jockey Rosie Napravnik guided Southern Equine Stable and Whispering Oaks Farm's D'cajun Cat in his debut and returns for Saturday night's race.

Besides saddling D'cajun Cat, the 2-1 morning-line favorite, Asmussen also will send out Mike McCarty's Gun Roar, who rallied to a narrow victory in his May 10 debut at Churchill.

"I've got high hopes for both horses," Asmussen said. "They've both trained very well since their wins and hopefully they'll have a little success."

D'cajun Cat will break from post 6 in the field of seven while Gun Roar will break from the rail under jockey Corey Lanerie.

"I love D'cajun Cat's draw with him drawing six of seven for a horse that's had one race," Asmussen said. "I don't like Gun Roar's draw at all going three-quarters (of a mile) here. It starts at an odd place for a baby."

Asmussen, a three-time winner of the Bashford Manor, entered the June 27 card ranked second in the trainer standings at Churchill Downs with 28 wins.

He will not be the only Bashford Manor trainer who has enjoyed success with juveniles this season as Wesley Ward will send out Ken and Sarah Ramsey's Hollywood Talent. Hollywood Talent was one of five juveniles to win their debuts for Ward at the Keeneland meeting.

Two of those Keeneland debut winners went on to run big at the Royal Ascot meeting, with No Nay Never winning the Norfolk Stakes (Eng-II) and Sweet Emma Rose running second in the Queen Mary Stakes (Eng-II).
