Castellano, Jacobsen Take Belmont Park Titles

Jockey and trainer comfortably in front of their rivals during spring/summer stand.

The 2013 Belmont Park spring/summer meet ended July 14 with jockey Javier Castellano and trainer David Jacobson comfortably atop their respective standings at the New York track.

It was the first spring/summer meet title for both Castellano, who won 72 races, and Jacobson, who won 44.

Castellano had previously captured the 2011 fall meet riding title at Belmont. He posted his fifth New York meet title overal.

Junior Alvarado finished second in the jockey standings with 58 wins, 10 ahead of third-place jockey Joel Rosario.

Jacobson's 44 wins broke the previous meet record of 40 set in 2003 by Todd Pletcher. Jacobson has now been the leading trainer for seven New York meets, including this year's Aqueduct Racetrack spring meet.

Pletcher, who captured the 2013 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) with Palace Malice , won 27 total races to finish second in the standings. Chad Brown was third with 23 wins.

One of Jacobson's clients, Drawing Away Stable, easily won the owner title with 27 wins. Darley Stable and Midwest Thoroughbreds tied for second with 11 wins.

Racing on the New York Racing Assoc. circuit will resume July 19 at historic Saratoga Race Course, which is celebrating its 150th season this year.
