First Winners Reported for Cowboy Cal

Tachi captures his second start at Indiana Downs Aug. 27 for freshman stallion.

In his second career start, Tachi captured a maiden special weight race Aug. 27 at Indiana Downs to become the first U.S.-based winner for freshman sire Cowboy Cal (VIDEO).
The 2-year-old colt posted a 1 3/4-length victory over 11 rivals, completing the six-furlong sprint in 1:12.27. Indiana-bred Tachi is out of the Alphabet Soup mare Gioello. Tachi was bred by Elm Tree Farm and races for Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch.
A multiple grade II winner, Cowboy Cal stood the 2013 breeding season for $7,500 at Pin Oak Stud in Versailles, Ky. He also is the sire of Cowboy Son, who has won a pair of races in Korea. Kentucky-bred Cowboy Son is out of the Smart Strike mare Nosmallachievement.
