Winslow Homer Retired to Journeyman Stud

Son of Unbridled's Song won grade III Holy Bull Stakes; fee to be determined.

Grade III winner Winslow Homer , a son of the late Unbridled's Song out of the graded stakes-winning Summer Raven (by Summer Squall), has been retired and will take up stallion duty at Brent and Crystal Fernung's Journeyman Stud near Ocala, Fla.

A fee for the 6-year-old horse will be announced at a later date.

Bred in Kentucky by Overbrook Farm, Winslow Homer was a $310,000 Keeneland September sale purchase in 2008 by Tom McGreevy, agent, for Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farms. He was the highest-priced son of Unbridled's Song sold that year.

Winslow Homer broke his maiden at second asking in August of his 2-year-old year at Saratoga Race Course, then ran off with an allowance victory at Philadelphia Park by 12 1/2 lengths to close out his juvenile campaign.

He scored a three-quarter-length victory over Jackson Bend in his 3-year-old debut in the one-mile Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park. Later that year he ran third in the 1 1/16-mile Iowa Derby (gr. III) and won the nine-furlong Curlin Stakes at Saratoga by nine lengths, earning a 97 Beyer Speed Figure in the latter.

At 4 he placed in the Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II). He retires with a 4-1-3 slate from 11 starts and $273,365 in earnings.

"I followed Winslow Homer's racing career closely from the time he broke his maiden at Saratoga as a 2-year-old," said Brent Fernung. "He had as much talent as any horse in his crop. He's a beautiful horse with a pedigree to match. The breeders in Florida are going to love him."

Unbridled's Song, who died July 26, is the sire of 102 stakes winners. He has eight stakes winners in 2013 including recent Travers Stakes (gr. I) winner Will Take Charge  and Whitney Invitational Stakes (gr. I) winner Cross Traffic . His Graydar  won the Donn Handicap (gr. I) earlier this year.

Winslow Homer is the first foal out of Tempted Stakes (gr. III) winner Summer Raven. Summer Raven's second dam is multiple stakes winner Rose Park, the dam of Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I) winner and sire Wild Rush. Consigned by Overbrook Farm, Eaton Sales, agent, Summer Raven sold for $1.7 million while in foal to Unbridled's Song at the 2009 Keeneland November sale to Reynolds Bell, agent.
