Rebranded Barretts Sale Offers 248 Yearlings

Auction brings together offspring by major Kentucky and California sires Oct. 8.

Having completed its first race meet under the rebranded Barretts Sales & Racing, the company will offer its annual yearling sale Oct. 8. With a catalog of 248 young prospects, the Barretts sale is coming off of three consecutive years of double-digit increases in average.

Alberts Hope demonstrates the type of yearlings sold at the sale. A $40,000 purchase in 2012, the Kentucky-bred son of Run Away and Hide —Accepting Fate, by Saint Ballado, won the Best Pal Stakes (gr. II) at Del Mar this year. He has earned $139,200 for owner Jaam Racing Inc. and trainer Mike Puype.

Major Kentucky and California sires will be represented in this year’s catalog, along with many stallions whose first foals are yearlings. The majority of the offerings are California-breds, eligible for the state’s incentive program and state-bred stakes.

Four of the current top 20 sires nationally have one apiece in the sale. Ghostzapper  has a colt out of stakes-winning Princess Deelite consigned by H & E Ranch. Giant's Causeway  is represented by a son of Thunder Gulch mare Maralago offered by River Edge Farm as agent. J & M Thoroughbreds has a daughter of More Than Ready  out of stakes-winning Ivanavinalot, while McCarthy Bloodstock has cataloged a son of Stormy Atlantic —Zoom Zip Zoom, by Old Topper.

Tribal Rule and Unusual Heat, the top two stallions on the California sire list, have several in the catalog. River Edge’s consignment includes two by Unusual Heat with the same second dam, multiple stakes winner Mama Simba, who is a half sister to multi-millionaire The Tin Man. The Cole Ranch brings three by Tribal Rule, including a son of Serena’s Echo, a full sister to Eclipse Award champion sprinter Thor’s Echo.

Square Eddie , California’s current leading first-crop sire, has four cataloged, though one has been withdrawn. The stallion has already been represented by two-time stakes winner Sprouts. Eddies Curl, also by Square Eddie, ran second to Sprouts in the CTBA Stakes at Del Mar.

Twelve stallions whose first foals are yearlings are represented in the catalog, including Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Super Saver . Though the Super Saver filly in the catalog has been scratched, Checkmate Thoroughbreds offers a son of the classic winner out of stakes-winning Talented, a daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus .

Millionaires Tale of Ekati  and Thorn Song will each have a filly in the catalog. The other first-time stallions with sale offspring are Black Seventeen, Desert Party , Discreetly Mine, Elusive Warning, Global Hunter, Grace Upon Grace, Majesticperfection , The Pamplemousse, and Tizdejavu.

The dam side is also well represented. Half siblings to stakes winners Excessivepleasure, Ismene, Joey Franco, Qiaona, and Unusual Way are among those being offered, as well as a full sister to stakes winner Starlight Magic. Willow Tree Farm has cataloged a daughter of English Channel  out of multiple stakes winner Dark Hours, the dam of two stakes winners and a stakes-placed runner.

The sale is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Pacific at the Hinds Pavilion in Pomona, Calif. Watch the sale online at:
