Jockey Jorge Carreno won his 1,000th race Oct. 9 riding Artistic Design to victory in race 5 at Turf Paradise, a claiming event for horses 3-years-old and up. Carreno is currently ranked third among the track's jockey colony.
Originally from Mexico City, Mexico, Carreno began riding in the U.S. in 2002 at age 19. To date, the biggest win for the graded stakes-winner was his 2012 Canadian Derby (Can-III) victory aboard Toccetive at Northlands Park.
Racing for owner Charles Garvey, the Robertino Diodoro-trained Artistic Design tracked the pace in fifth for most of the five-furlong dirt dash. Near the rail on the turn, the gray Unbridled's Song gelding felt some pressure in the stretch before drawing ahead to win by half a length over six rivals in a final time of :58.44. The winning mount was claimed by trainer Steve R. Irlando.
According to The Jockey Club, Carreno has had 7,054 mounts through Oct. 9 with total earnings of $8,855,631. In addition to his victories, he has 891 seconds and 866 third-place finishes.
