Mizdirection Sparkles in 5-Furlong Turf Work

The 2012 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner 'freaky good right now' for title defense.

Mizdirection tuned up for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT) with a sparkling five furlongs in :57 4/5 Oct. 25 at Santa Anita Park. With jockey Mike Smith in the irons, the mare toured the Santa Anita turf course in front of trainer Mike Puype, co-owner Bill Strauss, and bloodstock agent Alex Solis II.

"Look at how she did itthat's the key," said Puype. "He was never asking her for it. She is freaky good right now."

As Mizdirection rounded the turn quickly, Puype noted to Strauss that "she's doing it within herself." Though the official clocker got her in :57 4/5, Puype clocked her in :57 3/5. It was the only workout on the morning at the distance over the turf.

Strauss owns Mizdirection in a partnership that includes sports broadcasting personality Jim Rome's Jungle Racing. The 5-year-old daughter of Mizzen Mast --Deceptive, by Clever Trick, won the 2012 Turf Sprint and will likely be favored to duplicate that effort.

Though she hasn't raced since June, Mizdirection runs well fresh. She is undefeated in five races on Santa Anita's downhill turf course over which the Turf Sprint is conducted.

"I think she'll be closer to the lead this year than last year," said Strauss as he watched her work.

Puype likes the filly's versatility.

"She's done it every way," he said. "She's won on the lead, she's won laying second, she won laying third."

The Turf Sprint will likely have a full field of 14. Eighteen pre-entered, with Boat Trip, Cristoforo Colombo, Jeranimo , Obviously, and Silver Max  cross-entered in the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT). Capo Bastone  and Reneesgotzip cross-entered in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I).

In other Turf Sprint moves Oct. 25, Handsome Mike  worked four furlongs on the Santa Anita grass in :48 2/5, while Rock Me Baby drilled five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 on the main track at Betfair Hollywood Park.
