Top Mare Nastique Dies at 29

Daughter of Naskra won four grade I stakes and produced two graded stakes winners.

Brookdale Farm reported the death Dec. 10 of four-time grade I stakes winner Nastique due to the infirmities of old age.

"Nastique died just three weeks short of her 30th birthday," said Fred Seitz Jr., Brookdale's general manager. "She was not only a top-class race mare, a wonderful broodmare, but also a loyal and faithful servant right to the end, acting as babysitter and companion to numerous fillies off the track and many weanlings. She will be missed and has been buried at Brookdale."

The daughter of Naskra out of La Fantastique, by Le Fabuleux, won a total of six graded stakes. Her grade I victories came in the Delaware Handicap twice, the Ladies Handicap, and the Matriarch Stakes. She retired in 1990 with $843,121 in earnings. As a broodmare she produced 12 foals, which included two graded stakes winnersgrade I winner Nobo True and grade III winner Thunder Kittenand five other winners. She was bred and had been raced by Chaus Stables.
