Paulick Presented With Bergstein Award

The award, created by Team Valor International, was presented Dec. 11.

Ray Paulick, publisher of The Paulick Report, was presented with this year's Stan Bergstein Writing Award by Team Valor International Dec. 11 during the University of Arizona Symposium on Racing and Gaming.

Paulick's story about the case involving trainer Jane Cibelli and her veterinarian at Tampa Bay Downs appeared on The Paulick Report website Sept. 18. It was one of nine stories Team Valor nominated for its award.

Stories published between Nov. 2, 2012, and Nov. 1, 2013, were eligible for the award. One of the nominees was Frank Angst, a Blood-Horse staff writer, for a story on a horse that died in the receiving barn at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort.

Paulick was presented with a bronze trophy and $25,000 by Team Valor president Barry Irwin. The Bergstein award was inaugurated last year by Irwin, who said the award is designed to "incentivize" turf writers to do investigative reporting.

All but one of the nine stories nominated this year directly involved medication use in racehorses, as did last year's winner, a story in the New York Times.
