Cancellations Piling Up at Parx Racing

Weather and track conditions have led the track to bag 10 programs in December.

Parx Racing said live racing was canceled for Dec. 23-24, making the ninth and 10th lost programs in December.

Track officials said "excessive rain overnight was expected all day and is playing havoc with the racing surface."

Parx hasn't offered live racing since Dec. 8 with, according to Equibase, only five programs having been run since Dec. 1. Six cancellations were related to track conditions at the Pennsylvania track (Dec. 9, 16-17, and 21-23), while three were related to weather (Dec. 10 and 14-15).

Parx was the only Thoroughbred track scheduled to race Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.

Meanwhile, one barn remains under quarantine for equine herpesvirus at Parx. The quarantine, now expected to last until at least early January, keeps horses from shipping to Parx to race unless the owners opt to keep them there until the quarantine expires.

December hasn't been kind to other tracks in the Mid-Atlantic region. According to Equibase, Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort has lost five full programs and three partial programs during the month, while Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races has had four full-card cancellations and one partial-card cancellation.

Mountaineer has lost make-up days brought about by cancellations. Its final three nights of racing for the year are scheduled for Dec. 23 and 26-29; the meet was supposed to end Dec. 21.
