Apprentice Fontanez Pilots First Winner

Young jock breaks through with fourth career mount Feb. 21

Apprentice jockey Arny Fontanez earned his first career win Feb. 21 at Calder Casino & Racecourse, taking the third race aboard 30-1 shot Run Gia Run (VIDEO).

After some bumping at the start of the six-furong maiden claiming event, the 3-year-old Cowtown Cat  filly was settled just off the early pace before seizing a one-length lead in early stretch. Fontanez kept her mind on her business as she cruised to a 1 3/4-length triumph.
