Fillies and mares 3-years-old and upward are eligible for the 1 1/16-mile Matron, to be run over Woodbine’s Polytrack. The Ontario Matron has an approximate post time Saturday of 4:36 p.m. EDT. Also on the card is the $125,000 Colin Stakes for 2-year-olds at six furlongs.
My Option, winner of the Chicago Handicap (gr. III) by 6 1/2 lengths in her last out over Arlington’s Polytrack, will seek to repeat that form. The 4-year-old daughter of Belong to Me has collected stakes wins in each of her three years of racing, although she managed just a sixth in her only foray to Woodbine in the May 25 Hendrie Stakes (Can-III).
La Tia won the Arlington Matron Stakes (gr. III) in May in front-running fashion and figures to be on the lead in the Ontario Matron. The 5-year-old City Place mare owns seven lifetime victories, the most in this field, and has banked $537,442.
Spring in the Air won the Hendrie May 24 and the 4-year-old has been competitive in stakes company at Woodbine since 2012. In October 2012 the Spring At Last filly scored her best victory in the Alcibiades Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland. She has earned $888,264.
Northern Passion is a multiple stakes winner at Woodbine and will be looking for a hot pace to close into. She finished within 3 1/2 lengths of recent grade I winner Somali Lemonade at Keeneland last April in an allowance race.
Royal Fury has hit the board at Woodbine in six of seven starts, winning an allowance heat in May and finishing second in the Trillium Stakes in her most recent start June 14. She does her racing from a stalking position and is by the Canadian-raced stallion Langfuhr.
Smartyfly is another Woodbine stakes winner, having taken the Wonder Where last August in which she defeated Spring in the Air. She is a consistent sort and also will be prominently placed just off the lead.
Lady Rouge broke her maiden at Woodbine last fall and won an allowance tilt at Keeneland in April. The 4-year-old Ghostzapper filly is ambitiously placed here, but she did win three in a row before finishing well back in the Trillium Stakes June 14.
I'm a Kittyhawk has made all of her 11 career starts at Woodbine, 10 on the Polytrack. After a pair of allowance victories, she has tailed off in her last three efforts.
An hour before the Matron, 2-year-olds get a crack at stakes action in the Colin Stakes going six furlongs. Conquest Tsunami is the most accomplished starter in the field, having won both his career starts by a total of 14 lengths. The last one came in June in the Victoria Stakes at Woodbine, and he will be carrying three pounds less in the Colin. He has raced on or near the lead in both starts and the stretch-out from five to six lengths should pose no problem for the son of Stormy Atlantic.
R U Watchingbud has fired off a pair of thirds in stakes company after breaking his maiden at Woodbine, but was well back of Conquest Tsunami in the Victoria.
