Second at Ascot, Sunset Glow Back in Sorrento

Wesley Ward-trained charge faces six juvenile filly rivals in Del Mar Polytrack test.

Sunset Glow, runner-up in a group III test that drew 21 competitors at Royal Ascot in June, returns to action for trainer Wesley Ward in the $200,000 Sorrento Stakes (gr. II) Aug. 6 at Del Mar.

Seven 2-year-old fillies are signed on for the Sorrento, a 6 1/2-furlong Polytrack race that serves as a prep for the Del Mar Debutante (gr. I) Aug. 30. The Sorrento is the seventh on Wednesday's eight-race program with a 5 p.m. PDT approximate post.

Sunset Glow has posted three works over the Del Mar main track since returning from Great Britain. Sent off at 7-1 in Ascot's Albany Stakes (Eng-III) June 20, the daughter of Exchange Rate held the lead in the six-furlong grass test but was outrun to the wire while saving the second spot. She finished two lengths behind the winner, Cursory Glance.

Ten Broeck Farm's gray filly broke her maiden by two lengths in her prior start going five furlongs on the Belmont Park turf as the 8-5 favorite June 6. She has one prior start on a synthetic track, finishing second in her debut at Presque Isle Downs in May.

Victor Espinoza, who rode Sunset Glow in her previous two races, has the mount again in the Sorrento. Sunset Glow posted a bullet five-furlong drill of :59 3/5 over Del Mar's main track July 30, fastest of 32 at the distance.

La Grange, who graduated with a smart 2 3/4-length win in the Cinderella Stakes from slightly off the pace at Los Alamitos Race Course, is the 123-pound topweight in the Sorrento. She gives Sunset Glow four pounds after her stakes victory on dirt, which followed a second in her debut versus maidens on the Polytrack at Arlington International Racecourse June 8.

Big Chief Racing's daughter of Curlin  is trained by Keith Desormeaux, who has tabbed his brother Kent Desormeaux to ride once more following their Cinderella success July 13. They break from post 6.

Also coming out of the Cinderella is the Jerry Hollendorfer-conditioned Heart of Paradise, who was second in the six-furlong event as the 1-5 choice. The More than Ready  lass was heavily favored in the Cinderella off a front-running 2 1/2-length tally in her maiden debut June 5 at Santa Anita Park. Heart of Paradise also set the pace in the Cinderella (:22.34, :45.76) but drifted in and was easily passed by La Grange.

The dark bay filly, a $145,000 Keeneland yearling last September, has a new rider this time in Joe Talamo. They break from post 5. Heart of Paradise will benefit from the shift in weights in the Sorrento. She gets four pounds from La Grange after spotting that rival three pounds last time.

Maiden debut winners Conquest Eclipse, Sharla Rae, and Caval are joined by first-time starter Windy Forecast to comprise the remainder of the field.

Conquest Eclipse broke her maiden at Churchill Downs June 29 for trainer Mark Casse and Conquest Stables, and Caval graduated in a romp over three opponents June 19 at Santa Anita for Hollendorfer and owner J. W. Singer. Both were favorites in their initial starts.

W. C. Racing's Sharla Rae, who drew the rail for the Sorrento, also impressed for trainer Doug O'Neill, overcoming a slow break to win by 1 1/4 lengths with a rail bid.

Windy Forecast, a $260,000 OBS buy in March, owned by TNIP and trained by Simon Callaghan, worked a handy half mile in :46 3/5 over the Del Mar surface July 26, second quickest of 60 that morning.
