Beholder's Half Sister Brings $1.1 Million

Filly consigned by Clarkland was first to reach $1 million at Keeneland sale.

A bay half sister to two-time champion Beholder was purchased by Bridlewood Farm for $1.1 million to become the first offering to reach seven figures during early portion of the Sept. 8 session of the Keeneland September yearling sale.

Bridlewood general manager George Isaacs signed the ticket for the filly sired by hot 2014 stallion Curlin  and produced from stakes winner Leslie's Lady, by Tricky Creek. The filly was bred and consigned by Clarkland Farm.

Beholder, the winner of the 2013 Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I), won Eclipse Awards as champion 2- and 3-year-old filly in 2012 and '13, respectively.

The filly also is a half sister to grade I winner and sire Into Mischief .

Clarkland's Fred Mitchell said the mare was bred to Curlin because they loved the earlier colt she'd produced in 2011, Head Quarters, bought by Juddmonte Farm for $300,000.

"I said, 'When you get an individual that looks like that, why not breed the mare back to him.' You never know in today's market what they're going to do. We knew she was a very, very nice, special filly."
