Richies Party Girl Could Have Ken Maddy Edge

Wesley Ward trainee seeks graded score in full field Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.

Trainer Wesley Ward could get his Breeders' Cup Saturday started in a big way Nov. 1 if Richies Party Girl delivers in the $100,000 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes (gr. IIIT).

The 3-year-old daughter of Any Given Saturday is the slight 4-1 choice in a loaded field of 14 runners for the 6 1/2-furlong turf sprint, which kicks off the graded stakes action on a card anchored by the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I).

The Ken Maddy goes as Race 3 with an approximate post time of 11:25 a.m. local time.

Richies Party Girl comes off a sparkling Sept. 13 victory for Ward and co-owner Richard Raven in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint Stakes, where she set the course record for 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.51. She is also the winner of the May 18 Wait a While Stakes at Belmont Park, and returns to the course she traveled over last year to beat the boys going the same distance over the downhill turf in the Juvenile Turf Sprint Stakes on 2013 Breeders' Cup Saturday.

Lael Stables' Ageless is a serious threat to Richies Party Girl, coming off a surging runner-up finish in the Oct. 10 Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on the Keeneland turf. The 5-year-old Successful Appeal  mare is a graded winner, having captured the July 27 Royal North Stakes (Can-IIIT) at Woodbine as part of a three-race win streak that included Pimlico's The Very One Stakes and the Giant's Causeway Stakes at Keeneland back in the spring.

Arnaud Delacour trains the 5-1 second choice on the morning line. Ageless also is entered in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. I) Saturday at Santa Anita, where she is on the also-eligible list.

Harris Farms' homebred Velvet Mesquite stands out among the local runners. The California-bred 4-year-old daughter of In Excess won the Oct. 11 California Distaff Handicap at the Ken Maddy distance for trainer Blake Heap and seeks her first graded score while moving to open company. She is 6-1 on the morning line, as is Pennsylvania-bred On the Backstreets for trainer Peter Miller.
