Grade I Winner La Tia Retired

Salvador Hernandez' homebred to be sent to Candy Ride.

Salvador Hernandez' grade I-winning La Tia has been retired from racing and the plan is for the 6-year-old mare to be bred to Lane's End stallion Candy Ride  during this breeding season.

La Tia, a homebred Illinois-bred by City PlaceLa Adelita, by Sky Classic, won the Matriarch Stakes (gr. IT) at Del Mar last November and won seven other stakes during a five-year campaign. She made 24 starts, winning 10 times and earning $1,023,326.

Hernandez reports that a deal to sell the mare privately fell through and he decided to go ahead and move her to her next career as a broodmare.

"I looked at a couple of stallions, but I like his (Candy Ride's) pedigree," Hernandez said. "He's the sire of Shared Belief. Their lines match up pretty well, so why not give it a try."

La Tia also won the Athenia Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Belmont Park, Arlington International's Arlington Matron Stakes (gr. III), and Woodbine's Ontario Matron Stakes (Can-III) in 2014. She won the Arlington Oaks (gr. III) in 2012.
