Owner Ahmed Zayat confirmed Sept. 3 that American Pharoah will continue training toward a run in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I). Zayat's decision revises his emotional post-Travers Stakes (gr. I) gut reaction, which was to consider retiring the Triple Crown winner after a runner-up finish to longshot Keen Ice . It was only American Pharoah's second career loss in 10 starts, and the first since his debut last year.
"My initial concern right after the race was about American Pharoah's condition, because he did not run his 'A' race," Zayat said. "He has come out of the race in great shape. And after examining all the evidence and talking it over with our team, I have every confidence that he can run to his best again—and he deserves the chance to do so."
