Repole Stable’s Unlimited Budget will enter the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) as one of the favorites after improving to four-for-four and picking up her third graded stakes win March 30 when she registered a clear victory in the Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II). With just four career starts Unlimited Budget has quickly arrived on the scene—a typical story for 3-year-olds these days, but the daughter of Street Sense has deep roots at Michael O’Farrell Jr.’s Ocala Stud Farm and is a tribute to the patience of that famed breeding operation. Florida-bred Unlimited Budget traces back four generations of broodmares based at Ocala Stud Farm to Old Bess, a 1948 foal by Vincentive, who dates to the 1956 founding of the farm. Old Bess was bred by Colin MacLeod Jr. Stakes-placed Unlimited Pleasure, by Valid Appeal, produced Unlimited Budget in 2010. She also has produced Jardin and Beacon Shine, both by Montbrook, who each won grade III stakes in their juvenile seasons. Ocala Stud Farm stands four-time champion Florida sire Montbrook, who himself traces back three generations to Old Bess. Ocala Stud Farm showed patience as Unlimited Pleasure is out of Cricket Box, an unraced daughter of Notebook and Patsy’s Lil Girl, who won just once in eight career starts. But Cricket Box has proved herself as a broodmare. The half sister to grade I winner Mighty Appealing produced Unlimited Pleasure, grade I winner Outofthebox, and stakes winner Ruff and Ready. Cricket Box’s daughter Box of Joy, by Concerto, produced multiple graded stakes winner Tackleberry, who is by Montbrook. Patsy’s Lil Girl, by 1966 French juvenile champion Roi Dagobert, whom Joe O’Farrell brought to the U.S. and stood in Ocala, was the final foal of 16 produced by Ocala Stud Farm foundation mare Old Bess in a group that included 12 winners and two stakes winners. After Unlimited Budget won last year’s Demoiselle Stakes (gr. II) at Aqueduct, Ocala Stud assistant farm manager David O’Farrell called the family the farm’s “bread and butter.” Ocala Stud consigned Unlimited Budget to the 2012 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s March selected sale of 2-year-olds, where she brought a winning bid of $475,000 from trainer Todd Pletcher, acting as agent for owner Mike Repole. She was the second-highest priced filly at the sale and fifth-highest overall. Unlimited Budget is one of four stakes winners—including March 30 grade III winner Cigar Street—this year for Street Sense, who stands for $53,500 at Darley Japan Stallion Complex in Hokkaido.—F.A |

Unlimited Budget continued to follow in the footsteps of her other graded stakes-winning half siblings and made a strong case for herself along the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) trail as the daughter of Street Sense drew off to win the Feb. 23 Rachel Alexandra Stakes (gr. III) by 33/4 lengths under jockey Rosie Napravnik. Undefeated in three career starts, Unlimited Budget increased her earnings to $310,200 and earned 50 points in the “Road to the Kentucky Oaks” for her victory in the Rachel Alexandra, named after the 2009 Horse of the Year. After breaking her maiden on her first try by 91/2 lengths at Aqueduct Nov. 9, Unlimited Budget won the Demoiselle Stakes (gr. II) at the New York track two weeks later. The bay filly is trained by Todd Pletcher for Mike Repole’s Repole Stable. A resident of New York, Repole is the co-founder and former president of Glaceau, maker of Vitaminwater and Smartwater, which he sold to Coca-Cola for $4.1 billion in 2007. He is now a key investor in the healthy fast-food chain Energy Kitchen and is the chairman and majority owner of Pirate Brands, makers of the snack food Pirate’s Booty. In the Thoroughbred world, Repole is best known for campaigning 2010 champion juvenile male Uncle Mo, plus other grade I winner Stay Thirsty. Repole bought Unlimited Budget for $475,000 through Pletcher, agent, at the 2012 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s select sale of 2-year-olds in training. She was consigned by her breeder, Ocala Stud. Bred in Florida, Unlimited Budget is out of the winning, stakes-placed Valid Appeal mare Unlimited Pleasure, who is a half sister to grade I winner Outofthebox (by Montbrook). Unlimited Pleasure’s dam, Cricket Box (by Notebook), is a half sister to grade I winner Mighty Appealing (by Valid Appeal). Unlimited Pleasure has produced two other offspring to bring six figures at auction: Beacon Shine, who captured the 2005 Flash Stakes (gr. III); and Jardin, winner of the 2008 Schuylerville Stakes (gr. III) and runner-up in that year’s Spinaway Stakes (gr. I). Sixteen-year-old Unlimited Pleasure’s youngest foal is a yearling Discreetly Mine colt. The mare was bred to Ocala Stud stallion Adios Charlie for 2013. Street Sense is the sire of seven stakes winners, including other 2013 added-money victor Vitameta. Street Sense is standing the 2013 season at Darley Japan Stallion Complex.—E.M. |
