Scat Daddy sired his second consecutive El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) winner when Dice Flavor rallied from behind to capture the Feb. 16 race at Golden Gate Fields. Last year the young sire was represented by Daddy Nose Best in the Northern California race, a significant stop along the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) trail. Another dimension to the story is that Dice Flavor is out of the Afleet mare Afleet Summer, who is also the dam of Swift Warrior, winner of the Tampa Bay Stakes (gr. IIIT) the same day. Dice Flavor, who was making his first start on a synthetic surface in the El Camino Real Derby, earned 10 points on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby.” He is not yet nominated to the Triple Crown, but trainer Paddy Gallagher and owners Oda Racing Stable and US Equine have until March 23 to pay a late-nomination fee to make him eligible. Dice Flavor fetched $80,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale when acquired by Windmill Manor from James Keogh, agent. The following year the colt was bought for $100,000 from Stephens Thoroughbreds, agent, at the Barretts May 2-year-old sale by Nobuo Oda. He has raced all his starts for Oda Racing and US Equine. The colt, who broke his maiden at Betfair Hollywood Park in December, raced all his previous starts on the Southern California circuit. Trained by Patrick Gallagher, he now holds a record of 2-0-2 from five starts, for earnings of $160,500. Dice Flavor was bred in Kentucky by Paget Bloodstock, Nearctic Bloodstock, and Carhue Investments. Coolmore’s Dermot Ryan, who manages Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky., said the group of breeders represent a Coolmore employee syndicate headed by Coolmore Ireland manager Harry King. “All the credit (for breeding Dice Flavor) goes to Harry. It was a good nick, and he thought it would be a very good match—he loves Scat Daddy and thought he was a very good racehorse,” said Ryan of the stallion, who stands at Ashford. Afleet Summer, who is boarded at Ashford, is barren for 2013. The mare’s youngest offspring are yearling and 2-year-old fillies by Giant’s Causeway. Ryan said it was likely the mare would be bred to Uncle Mo this year. Scat Daddy, the sire of 11 stakes winners, stands for $30,000 at Ashford.—E.M. |
