Edward P. Evans All Along S. Recap

Finding victory on the turf was not a novel experience for Channel Lady. Winning the Edward P. Evans All Along Stakes (gr. IIIT) was her fifth triumph on the grass for owners James T. Scatuorchio and Jake J. Pletcher and her second graded-stakes coup after taking the Suwannee River Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Gulfstream Park in February. Second-choice in the race, the Todd Pletcher trainee was ridden confidently by jockey Javier Castellano, who saved ground in the 11/8-mile contest, traveling contentedly in third over the Colonial Downs’ firm turf before asking the 4-year-old English Channel filly to make a move in the stretch. The pair parted competitors and hit the wire with daylight to spare, her second victory at this distance.

Channel Lady is out of Queen Supreme and was bred in Kentucky by Kaygar Stable, Wayne Morris, Bluegrass Hall, and James Scatuorchio. As a weanling, she was consigned to the 2009 Keeneland November Sale by the Rockwell Sales Agency, as agent, and acquired by Pedigree Consultants. She began racing as a 2-year old for Scatuorchio.

She is the first foal for her dam and the only one yet to race. Queen Supreme was herself a winner of four races, and is a half sister to the stakes winner and graded stakes-placed horse, Pirate of Penzance. Multiple graded stakes winner Caller I. D., by Phone Trick—Plagiarizing, who counts the Arlington-Washington Futurity (gr. II) and the Saratoga Special Stakes (gr. II) among his victories, also belongs to the same family as Channel Lady.

Irish stallion King of Kings, Channel Lady’s broodmare sire, was the 1998 highweighted colt at 3 and a multiple graded-stakes winner in Europe, including wins in the Sagitta Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) at Newmarket and the Aga Khan Studs National Stakes (Ire-I) at the Curragh. He is the sire of 26 stakes winners and has been a stallion on five continents including his current post in South Africa.

Channel Lady now holds a record of 5-2-0 from her 10 starts and has accumulated earnings of $338,910. She is one of nine stakes winners for English Channel, who includes Optimizer, Skyring, and Blueskiesnrainbows among his top performers. He is also the sire of Canadian champion Strait of Dover.

English Channel stands at Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky., for a fee of $25,000. —M.P.
