Hear the Ghost made himself visible on the Triple Crown trail when he beat favorites Flashback and Goldencents in the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita March 9. The gelded son of Ghostzapper collared Flashback near the end of the 11/16 miles to win by a half-length for Ted Aroney’s Halo Farms and trainer/co-owner Jerry Hollendorfer. Goldencents finished fourth as the 2-1 second choice. Hear the Ghost, who was recording his first stakes win and his second score in three starts, was bred by William S. Farish’s Lane’s End Farm in partnership with Lazy F Ranch. Martha Gerry, Farish’s late aunt who owned Lazy F, remains best known for racing Hall of Famer and three-time Horse of the Year Forego in the Lazy F silks. Mike Cline, who manages Lane’s End near Versailles, Ky., remembered Hear the Ghost as a “strong-made colt with good bones and big shoulders and hip” while the horse was at the farm. “A nice, solid horse.” Hear the Ghost sold to Hollendorfer for $40,000 during the sixth session of the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale. He was consigned by Lane’s End, agent. “He sold early and was our first that day to go through the ring,” Cline said. Farish is rooting not only for Hear the Ghost on the Triple Crown trail but also for Revolutionary. Bred by Farish, Revolutionary won the Withers Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct Feb. 2 for WinStar Farm. Farish also is the breeder of 2013 stakes winners Graydar, winner of the Donn Handicap (gr. I), and Makeshift. The performances of Hear the Ghost’s female family offers some encouragement in the way of class when it comes to his being able to tackle the 10 furlongs of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Hear the Ghost’s winning dam, Rehear (by Coronado’s Quest), is represented by five foals of racing age (excluding 2-year-olds) and all five are multiple winners including grade I winner Mani Bhavan and multiple stakes-placed Dattt Echo. By Storm Boot, Mani Bhavan won the 2008 Spinaway Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga. Rehear, who produced a War Front colt the day of the San Felipe, is booked to Hard Spun. Ghostzapper has sired 30 stakes winners including four this year. The 2004 Horse of the Year stands for $40,000—up from $20,000—at Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs near Paris, Ky.—D.S. |
