Shakin It Up shook things up along the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) trail when the son of Midnight Lute scored his first stakes victory in the Feb. 17 San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park. Trained by Bob Baffert, Shakin It Up is owned by Mike Pegram and Dennis Cardoza. Pegram and Baffert also teamed to win the fifth race at Santa Anita Feb. 17 with Govenor Charlie who, like Shakin It Up, was sired by two-time Breeders’ Cup winner Midnight Lute. Pegram raced the Baffert-trained Midnight Lute in partnership with Karl Watson and Weitman Performances (Paul Weitman). Pegram, who bred Shakin It Up in Kentucky, owns a large string of McDonald’s in Arizona and is involved in the casino industry in Nevada. Alone or in partnership, Pegram has bred and/or raced many other graded stakes victors, including Fiftyshadesofhay, winner of the Jan. 28 Santa Ysabel Stakes (gr. III) at Santa Anita. Shakin It Up is out of the Vindication mare Silver Bullet Moon. Unraced Silver Bullet Moon is a daughter of Silverbulletday (by Silver Deputy), who was named the United States’ 2-year-old and 3-year-old champion filly while racing for Pegram and Baffert. During her career Silverbulletday won 14 stakes, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), Ashland Stakes (gr. I), Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), Alabama Stakes (gr. I), and Gazelle Handicap (gr. I). She retired with earnings of more than $3 million. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009. Produced by the grade II-winning Tom Rolfe mare Rokeby Rose (by Tom Rolfe), Silverbulletday is a half sister to grade I producer Garden Secrets (by Time for a Change). Shakin It Up is the second foal and second winner out of Silver Bullet Moon, whose youngest foal, a full brother to the San Vicente winner, was born Jan. 20 at John Sikura’s Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms near Lexington. The mare is booked to Midnight Lute for 2014. “The biggest regret I’ve ever had in horse racing is that I never bred Silverbulletday to (1998 Kentucky Derby winner) Real Quiet, because at the time they were my two best horses,” said Pegram. “But now I have a chance to breed Real Quiet’s son to Silverbulletday’s daughters. So whenever I get that opportunity I’m taking it, and so far it’s working pretty good.” Midnight Lute, the sire of two stakes winners, stands for $15,000 at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm near Lexington.—E.M. |
