Coil, a grade I winner the past two years, ended his racing career in grand fashion. The 5-year-old son of Point Given won the San Pasqual Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Jan. 5 to bring his record to 7-2-3 from 14 starts and earnings of $1,154,360. He will take up stallion duty at Rich and Gaby Sulpizio’s Magali Farms near Santa Ynez, Calif. His fee is $5,000. “He’s very healthy right now, but it’s time to send him to stud,” said Coil’s trainer, Bob Baffert, who trained Point Given for The Thoroughbred Corporation. Coil brings three other graded stakes wins to stud. At 3 he won the Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) over Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Shackleford and Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Ruler On Ice. He also captured the Affirmed Handicap (gr. III). As a 4-year-old he took the Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (gr. I). Coil, who was bred in Florida by Glen Hill Farm, also brings a solid stakes-winning female family to Magali. His winning dam, Eversmile (by Theatrical), is a half sister to champion turf female Possibly Perfect and English group III winner Makhlab. By Northern Baby and a six-time grade I winner, Possibly Perfect is the dam of New York graded stakes winner Promontory Gold. The team of Karl Watson, Michael Pegram, and Paul Weitman that raced Coil enjoyed a superior 2012 season. They campaigned additional graded stakes winners Drill, Really Mr Greely, Secret Circle, and Executiveprivilege. An Eclipse Award finalist in the 2-year-old filly division, Executiveprivilege won four stakes, three of which were graded, including the Chandelier Stakes (gr. I) and the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (gr. I) and finished second in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I). Point Given, the 2001 Horse of the Year and Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes winner, has sired 20 stakes winners, 10 of which are graded or group winners. Point Given stands at Robert N. Clay’s Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky. His 2013 fee is private.—D.S. |
