Michael Talla’s More Chocolate, a 4-year-old Malibu Moon filly, captured the La Canada Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Jan. 20 in her second graded stakes outing and added her name to the list of La Canada winners that includes such stars as Lady’s Secret, Chris Evert, Glorious Song, Spain, and Goodbye Halo. More Chocolate is taking after her dam, Little Treasure. Little Treasure’s signature score also came in a grade II stakes in Southern California. The French-bred daughter of Night Shift won the 2002 San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT) at Del Mar. More Chocolate was bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm at the time the farm was owned by members of the family of the late Henryk de Kwiatkowski, who had bought the farm in 1992. Located near Lexington, the farm presently is leased and operated by Brad Kelley, who took control in 2012. Calumet bought Little Treasure for $600,000 at the 2004 Keeneland November breeding stock sale from Narvick International agent. Little Treasure was carrying her first foal, by Fusaichi Pegasus. More Chocolate twice was sold at auction. Calumet consigned her to the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale, where she was bought for $45,000 during the fifth session by Barry Berkelhammer, agent for PHB Racing. Seven months later at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton Florida March 2-year-olds in training sale, Martin Anthony bought More Chocolate for $310,000 from Cary Frommer, agent. Talla, from Westwood, Calif., has raced additional graded stakes winners Crisp and Mona de Momma. By El Corredor, Crisp won both the 2010 Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I) and the Santa Ysabel Stakes (gr. III). That same year Mona de Momma, by Speightstown, captured the Humana Distaff Stakes (gr. I) and the Las Flores Handicap (gr. III). In 2012, Talla’s filly Regal Betty won the Arizona Oaks. Malibu Moon, who stands at B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm near Lexington, has sired 66 stakes winners including Spendthrift-bred Kauai Katie, winner of the Jan. 1 Old Hat Stakes (gr. III). Malibu Moon’s 2013 fee is $70,000.—D.S. |

Joyful Victory exemplified her name and became racing’s newest millionaire with her easy, front-running score in the March 16 Santa Margarita Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park. The well-traveled, 5-year-old daughter of Tapit, who has raced at nine different tracks across the country during her 17-start career, is now two-for-two in 2013, having also captured the Jan. 26 Houston Ladies Classic Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park for trainer Larry Jones and Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farms. Now a three-time graded stakes winner, Joyful Victory was a $60,000 yearling. She was acquired for $400,000 by Fox Hill at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Florida March 2-year-old sale from Cary Frommer, agent. Joyful Victory has been campaigned in all her starts by Porter, who outside of racing runs his family’s Porter Automotive Group. He is represented by other graded victors Round Pond, Hard Spun, Eight Belles, Jostle, and Kodiak Kowboy. Porter also raced 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace, who fetched $10 million from Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed sale. Bred in Ontario, Canada, by Bill Graham, Joyful Victory is out of the winning, Wild Again mare Wild Lucy Black, whose dam, Lucy Black (by Alydar), is a half sister to 1982 champion 2-year-old male Roving Boy (by Olden Times) and to grade I producer Sally’s Ride (by Inverness Drive). Joyful Victory was raised at Graham’s Windhaven Farm near Lexington. Farm manager Tim Beeson described the Santa Margarita winner as “a nice foal” and “very athletic.” Graham has raced several stakes winners over the years under the Windhaven banner, including grade III winner Cotton Carnival. As a breeder, he is represented by other graded victors River Seven, Uncaptured, and Vice n’ Friendly. Beeson said Graham decided to sell Joyful Victory because Tapit’s foals were being well received at the time in the auction ring. Wild Lucy Black was most recently sold for $80,000 to SF Bloodstock at the 2011 Keeneland November breeding stock sale through Eaton Sales, agent. Her last named offspring is the unraced 4-year-old Whywhywhy filly Why Lucy Why, who produced a Trappe Shot colt Jan. 16. Wild Lucy Black’s 2012 Congrats foal died. She was bred to Trappe Shot for 2013. Tapit is the sire of 40 stakes winners, including other 2013 added-money victors Flashback (gr. II), Honorable Dillon (gr. II), and Tapicat (gr. IIIT). Tapit stands for $125,000 at Antony Beck’s Gainesway near Lexington.—E.M. |
