Hilliard Lyons Doubledogdare S. Recap

G. Watts Humphrey Jr.’s homebred Ice Cream Silence secured the first graded stakes win of her career when the Street Sense filly opened a clear advantage in the stretch then held off a late charge from Sisterhood in the Hilliard Lyons Doubledogdare Stakes (gr. III) April 19 at Keeneland Race Course.

It marks the second straight season that Ice Cream Silence has won a stakes race after she capped a three-race win streak last year with a victory in the Optimistic Gal Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Ice Cream Silence was bred in Kentucky by Humphrey and his mother, the late Louise Ireland Humphrey. She is the first stakes winner for her dam, the stakes-winning Seeking the Gold mare Double Scoop. She has produced three winners from four starters.

G. Watts Humphrey landed Double Scoop for $400,000 at the 2001 Keeneland September yearling sale, where she was consigned by Eaton Sales. Bred in California by John and Betty Mabee, Double Scoop is out of the grade I-winning Theatrical mare Golden Treat, who was campaigned by the Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm.

Winning trainer Rusty Arnold said Ice Cream Silence has shown a lot of talent but was sidetracked by injury last year.

“Last year we thought she was our best filly,” Arnold said. “She went out to Prairie Meadows (finishing second in the Iowa Oaks, gr. III, June 30) and got injured and missed the entire fall. We brought her back; nothing went right in Florida. We didn’t get her the right way.”

Ice Cream Silence was sent to Kentucky after she finished seventh in the Inside Information Stakes (gr. II) to open the season.

“We brought her in here early, and she did everything right,” Arnold said. “We had decided we were going to run her in here after we ran her in Florida. It was one of those plans that went the right way.”

As the fifth stakes winner this season for Street Sense, Ice Cream Silence adds to her sire’s strong 2013 start. His other stakes winners this year include Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II) winner and one of the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) favorites Unlimited Budget, grade II winner Aubby K, improving grade III winner Cigar Street, and Vitameta. Street Sense stands for $53,500 at Darley Japan Stallion Complex in Hokkaido, Japan.—F.A
