G. Watts Humphrey Jr.’s longterm goal with Centre Court was to land a grade I victory. After smashing victories in last fall’s Mrs. Revere Stakes (gr. IIT) and the Honey Fox Stakes (gr. IIT) at Gulfstream Park in her 2013 debut, she seemed poised and ready. She delivered April 13 at Keeneland, reeling in the loose-on-the-lead Daisy Devine to win the Jenny Wiley Stakes (gr. IT) by two lengths. A year ago Daisy Devine was left to her own devices in the 11/16-mile Jenny Wiley and won after setting a :50.78 opening half, topping a field that included eventual older turf female champion Zagora. This year she set a :48.06 opening four furlongs and was caught by only one of the older fillies and mares in the lane. Humphrey purchased Let, the dam of the Jenny Wiley winner, for $350,000 at the 1996 Keeneland July yearling sale. There was brilliance in the pedigree, as the female family members included the dazzling Arazi. And Let’s value soon escalated further with the arrival of Joyeux Danseur, a half brother to Let’s second dam, Doubles Partner. Joyeux Danseur won four stakes in 1998 including the Early Times Turf Classic Stakes (gr. IT) at Churchill Downs, then embarked on a stallion career at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky. More black type and championships followed. Arazi’s half brother, Noverre (by Rahy), was a highweighted colt at 3 in England and went on to be a successful sire. Let’s half brother, Eagle Café, would go on to win the grade I Japan Cup Dirt in 2002. Grade III winner Fabuleux Jane, the fourth dam of the Jenny Wiley winner, is a half sister to three other stakes winners. Her dam, Native Partner, is a half to Jim French, a top 3-year-old of 1971, winning the Santa Anita Derby and running second to Canonero II in the Kentucky Derby and to Pass Catcher in the Belmont Stakes. Let is in foal to Curlin for 2014 and resides at Humphrey’s Shawnee Farm near Harrodsburg, Ky. Smart Strike, a two-time leading sire in North America, is the sire of 93 stakes winners including four additional 2013 added-money winners including Swagger Jack, winner of the April 6 Carter Handicap (gr. I). Smart Strike stands at William S. Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky. His 2013 fee is $85,000.—E.H. |
