Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix S. Recap
After finishing off the board in his first three starts this season, all stakes races, Sum of the Parts returned from a layoff to defend his title in the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes (gr. III) Oct. 4 at Keeneland.
Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence’s Sum of the Parts won four of six starts last year, including three stakes races, before the Speightstown colt struggled at the start of his 4-year-old season this year. Trainer Tom Amoss said he likely brought Sum of the Parts back too soon, but the trainer never lost faith in Sum of the Parts.
“I told the group I was with, ‘This is the most athletic horse I’ve trained. He’s the quickest horse I’ve ever trained out of the gate.’ He really showed that today,” Amoss said after the race. “All the credit goes to the horse.”
Bred in Kentucky by Kip and Suzanne Knelman’s Farfellow Farms, breeder of 1999 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner and champion 2-year-old male Anees, 2002 Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) winner Buddha, and 2006 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Lemons Forever, Sum of the Parts is out of grade II winner Enjoy the Moment, by Slew’s Royalty.
While Enjoy the Moment has not produced any other stakes winners, she does boast five winners from seven starters. Before the 1999 race season, when she would win four stakes races, Farfellow Farms privately purchased Enjoy the Moment from owner/breeder Jacoby Family Trust.
Consigned by Eddie Woods, agent, Patrice Miller went to $150,000 to land Sum of the Parts for Klaravich and Lawrence at the 2011 Barretts March select 2-year-olds in training sale.
Sum of the Parts is one of 19 stakes winners this year for leading sire Speightstown, including group/grade I winners Reynaldothewizard, Dance to Bristol, Lighthouse Bay and She’s Happy (Southern Hemisphere). A 15-year-old son of Gone West—Silken Cat, by Storm Cat, Speightstown is the leading sire in North America in 2013 (through Oct. 6). He stood the 2013 season for $60,000 as a Taylor Made Stallions-WinStar venture.—F.A
