Arlington H. Recap
Rahystrada captured an historic third Arlington Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Arlington Park July 13. Traveling with the pace for most of the 11/4-mile turf test, he took the lead at the mile mark, pulled away in the stretch, and bested his rivals by a half length at the wire. Now standing alone as the winningest horse of the Arlington Handicap, the 9-year-old gelding’s two previous wins (2010, 2012) had him sharing the honors with Round Table (1958-59) and Cosmonaut (2006-07).
Bred in Kentucky by Jaime S. Carrion Trustee, the son of Rahy ran as a hombred for Carrion until 2009, when he first raced for owner Robert E. Courtney Jr. Rahystrada is one of two graded stakes winners for his mare, Ministrada, by Deputy Minister. Lone Star Sky, Rahystrada’s half brother (by Conquistador Cielo), counts the Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III) among his victories. Ministrada was also bred in Kentucky by Carrion, though was unraced; she has produced four winners from her six starters.
Second dam, Funistrada (by Fappiano), was a grade II stakes winner and a sister to stakes-winning Wakonda. She produced two stakes winners of her own, Conte Di Savoya and Krisada (gr. II). Her daughters Zahwah and Private Fun both produced stakes winners—Spring Venture (gr. II) and Admonition, respectively.
The Arlington Handicap makes five grade III wins for the chestnut gelding, including his 2011 win in the Kentucky Cup Turf Stakes at Kentucky Downs and the River City Handicap at Churchill Downs in 2009. In addition, Rahystrada is stakes-placed in four other graded stakes efforts including a third-place finish in last year’s Arlington Million Stakes (gr. IT).
From his winning debut to this historic third Arlington Handicap, turf-loving Rahystrada has been consistently in top form, finishing in the top four in 33 of his 44 starts. He has accumulated earnings totaling $1,371,750 and a record of 14-5-8. He is ranked among the top earners for his sire, Rahy, along with Fantastic Light, Serena’s Song, Dreaming of Anna, and Tranquility Lake.
Rahy sired 95 stakes winners. He was pensioned in 2009 and died at 26 on Sept. 22, 2011, at Robert N. Clay’s Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky.—M.P.
