Owner Mike Repole may have experienced misfortune with his Belmont Stakes (gr. I) starters Unlimited Budget, Overanalyze, and Midnight Taboo, who finished sixth, seventh, and 12th, respectively, in the June 8 race; but one week later Repole’s Notacatbutallama rejuvenated his spirits when the son of Harlan’s Holiday captured the June 15 Hill Prince Stakes (gr. IIIT) at the New York track.

It was the first graded stakes victory for Notacatbutallama, who had won two overnight stakes on the New York circuit last year. Trained by Todd Pletcher, he holds a record of 4-3-1 from 10 starts and has earned $308,334 for Repole, a resident of New York and co-founder and former president of the beverage company Glaceau, which he sold to Coca-Cola for $4.1 billion in 2007.

Now chairman and majority owner of Pirate Brands, makers of the snack food Pirate’s Booty, Repole is perhaps best known in the Thoroughbred world for campaigning 2010 champion juvenile male Uncle Mo.

Repole’s Notacatbutallama has sold twice at auction. As a yearling, he was bought for $50,000 by Nick de Meric, agent, at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga preferred New York-bred sale from Skara Brae Stables, agent.

The following year the bay colt fetched $105,000 from Repole Stables through Jonathan Thomas, agent, at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s April 2-year-old sale from De Meric Sales, agent.

Bred in Kentucky by Cortright Wetherill’s Malvern, Pa.-based Happy Hill Farm, Notacatbutallama was produced from the winning, stakes-placed Hansel mare Self Rising.

Salt In My Stew (by Dr. Blum), the second dam of Self Rising, is also the granddam of grade II-winning millionaire Eishin Cameron (by With Approval), plus other dual graded stakes victor Feline Story (by Tale of the Cat).

Wetherill, who also bred and raced Self Rising and her stakes-placed dam, My Necessity (by Ziggy’s Boy), under the Happy Hill name, bought Salt In My Stew for $10,000 at the 1985 OBS spring 2-year-olds in training sale. She was consigned by Stonewall Farm through Wooden Horse Stud, agent.

In light of Notacatbutallama’s racetrack success, his half sister Jazzminegem (by Mineshaft), was acquired for $100,000 by Peacock Ridge, agent, at this year’s OBS April 2-year-old sale from Sequel Bloodstock, agent.

Jazzminegem is the last reported foal out of Self Rising, who was bred to Girolamo for 2013.

Harlan’s Holiday, the sire of 38 stakes winners, stands for $35,000 at Kenny Troutt’s WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky.—E.M.
