Tapicat made her stakes debut a memorable one. The 3-year-old daughter of Tapit set the pace in the Florida Oaks (gr. IIIT) at Tampa Bay Downs Feb. 2 on her way to a 23/4-length score. The victory was her third in four starts and came as the 4-5 favorite. “We really love her,” said Benjamin Leon Jr., who races Tapicat in the name of Besilu Stables. “We look for excellent pedigree, conformation, and racing ability, and she has all three. We expected her to do well. She is an unbelievable filly.” Leon, who raced two-time Eclipse Award-winning filly Royal Delta, bought Tapicat for $725,000 out of Book One of the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale. The filly was consigned by Antony Beck’s Gainesway as agent for itself and Ron Winchell’s Winchell Thoroughbreds. Bred in Kentucky by Winchell Thoroughbreds and Gainesway Thoroughbreds, Tapicat was produced from the winning Storm Cat mare Zealous Cat. “We both owned the mare,” said David Fiske, who manages Ron Winchell’s Lexington farm, Corinthia. “Plus, both Gainesway and Winchell Thoroughbreds have a big interest in Tapit.” Winchell Thoroughbreds raced Tapit, who was a two-time graded stakes winner. The son of Pulpit won the Laurel Futurity (gr. III) at 2 and the following year took the Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I). Following his racing career, Tapit entered stud at Gainesway Farm near Lexington. Zealous Cat is no longer owned by the two outfits. She was consigned by Gainesway to the 2012 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, where she was bought in foal to Tapit for $350,000 by Glen Hill Farm. Zealous Cat foaled a colt from that mating last Feb. 15. Tapit has sired 40 stakes winners including 2013 added-money winners Flashback, Honorable Dillon, and Joyful Victory. The first two-named were graded stakes winners the day of the Florida Oaks. Flashback won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita, and Honorable Dillon took the Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park. Tapit’s 2013 fee at Gainesway is $125,000.—D.S. |
