San Fernando S. Recap

Fed Biz, who attracted plenty of attention when selling for $950,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale, did the same when he won the San Fernando Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park Jan. 12. The victory was Fed Biz’ first in a graded event and came about 41/2 months after the colt won his other added-money event, the El Cajon Stakes, Aug. 31 at Del Mar.

Fed Biz, who has won four of his eight starts for owner Kaleem Shah, was the fourth-highest-priced yearling at that Keeneland September sale. Shah purchased him from William S. Farish’s Lane’s End, agent.

Bred in Kentucky by Richard Santulli’s Colts Neck Stables, Fed Biz is the second stakes winner out of the stakes-placed Wild Again mare Spunoutacontrol, whose first added-money winner, Spun Silk (by A.P. Indy), won the restricted Ride Sally Stakes at Aqueduct in 2005.

Fed Biz carries the highest TrueNicks rating, an A++. The Giant’s Causeway/Wild Again cross is responsible for three foals, all winners, including stakes winner Abuela, who won the 2011 Ellis Park Turf Stakes.

Giant’s Causeway, who captured his third sires’ title in 2012 with progeny earnings of more than $10.1 million, and his sire, two-time leading sire Storm Cat, have nicked well with members of Fed Biz’ female family descending from Yarn. By Mr. Prospector, Yarn is Fed Biz’ second dam. Grade II winner Tale of the Cat (by Storm Cat), multiple champion Johannesburg (by Storm Cat’s son Hennessy), and Irish group II-placed Grand Admiral (by Giant’s Causeway) descend from Yarn. Both Tale of the Cat and Johannesburg developed into successful sires.

Colts Neck enjoyed a solid year as a breeder in 2012. The outfit was represented by four stakes winners including In Lingerie, whose most important of three graded wins came in the Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (gr. I), and grade II winner Casino Host.

Giant’s Causeway has sired 129 stakes winners, including 26 that were added-money winners in 2012. Giant’s Causeway stands at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky. His 2013 fee is $85,000.—D.S.
