Just nine days after his Horse of the Year half brother Wise Dan won a graded stakes race at Keeneland Race Course for the fifth time, older brother Successful Dan secured his second graded stakes victory at the Lexington track. Before 20,244, the third-largest Sunday crowd in track history, Successful Dan controlled the pace, put away an early stretch challenge from two-time grade II winner Boisterous, and cruised to a one-length victory in the Ben Ali Stakes (gr. III) April 21. Successful Dan completed the 11/8-mile race on Polytrack in 1:51.14 to improve to five wins in five Keeneland starts. Both Wise Dan, who became Keeneland’s all-time leader in graded stakes wins with five when he won the Maker’s 46 Mile Stakes (gr. IT) April 12, and Successful Dan are homebreds for Mort Fink. With the seven stakes wins from the half brothers, Fink is one victory away from securing a gold tray from Keeneland, which awards julep cups for each graded stakes win and a gold tray after eight such wins. The victory followed a layoff of more than nine months for Successful Dan. And, his previous Keeneland stakes win in the Greenbrier Fayette Stakes (gr. II) was nearly 21/2 years ago. While all of the males produced by Successful Dan’s dam, Lisa Danielle, by Wolf Power, are geldings, she has produced six females, including Afleeting Lisa, a yearling by Afleet Alex, and Enchanting Lisa, a War Chant 3-year-old in training for her first start. Her 13-year-old stakes-winning daughter by Roy, Our Royal Dancer, has produced a group II-placed winner in Argentina and her daughters Aweemaway, by Skip Away; Honor Patti, by Honour and Glory; and Courting Elaine, by Doneraile Court are all young broodmares. Lisa Danielle is a finalist for this year’s Kentucky Broodmare of the Year award. Successful Dan is the third stakes winner this season for the 17-year-old Valid Appeal sire Successful Appeal, who stands for $10,000 at Walmac Farm in Lexington. His other 2013 added-money winners are Sunshine Millions Distaff Stakes winner Successful Song and Ruthless Stakes winner Lady Banks.—F.A. |
