Bo and Stella Smith of Gunsmith Stable may be considered small breeders, but the success they’ve experienced with the family of General George Handicap (gr. III) winner Javerre is anything but minor. Trained by Cathal Lynch, the 4-year-old homebred son of Outflanker has now won or placed in five black-type events and has earned $323,170 for the Smiths, who have bred and raced three generations of the gelding’s family. It all started when the Smiths privately acquired Javerre’s fourth dam Fancy Pan as a 4-year-old in 1987. “I was so excited to get her…besides her record as a racehorse, she was a daughter of Paavo, whose dam, Too Bald, produced (grade I winners) Capote and Exceller,” said Bo Smith of Fancy Pan, who won two stakes and earned more than $230,000 on the track. Fancy Pan was just as good a broodmare as she was a racehorse, producing the Lord Avie mare Avie’s Fancy, who captured two graded stakes and earned more than $400,000. As a broodmare, Avie’s Fancy produced stakes winner Our Cozzette (by Cozzene), the dam of Javerre’s dam Our Fantene. A daughter of Touch Gold, Our Fantene also became a stakes winner for the Smiths and amassed earnings of $146,273 during her brief, six-start career. When asked about the reasoning behind the mating that produced Javerre, Bo Smith explained, “I looked for what I thought would be the best match for Our Fantene with (a stallion) that was reasonably priced. Outflanker fit that bill…from a gene pool standpoint, it looked really nice and it was going to be the mare’s first foal, so we thought we’d take a shot.” Smith said the resulting foal, Javerre, was precocious from the start. “We hoped to get him to the races at 2, but he suffered a broken pastern in his last breeze before being shipped to Catahal Lynch at Philadelphia Park,” he explained. Javerre, who was broken by Joe Dodgen, was quick to recover from his injury, which resulted in three screws inserted to hold the bone in place. Along with the possibilities on the horizon for Javerre, the Smiths are also anticipating the birth of Our Fantene’s latest offspring by Jump Start, which is due any day. Kept at Derry Meeting Farm near Cochranville, Pa., Our Fantene is booked to Malibu Moon for 2014. Outflanker, the sire of 21 stakes winners, stands for $3,000 at Shamrock Farm near Woodbine, Md.—E.M. |
