In winning the Matt Winn Stakes (gr. III) June 15 at Churchill Downs, Code West added a small chapter to the legacy of the late Thoroughbred breeder Edward P. Evans while showing enough class to suggest bigger chapters may be on the way. After shadowing Dewey Square through a half-mile in :48.96 and six furlongs in 1:13.57, Gary and Mary West’s Code West put away that rival and found enough to prevail by a head after a stretch duel with grade II winner Uncaptured to secure the first stakes win of his career. “When (Uncaptured) came to us, I thought he had us,” said winning rider Rosie Napravnik. “It was all the horse. He picked up and did not want to lose. Not a lot of horses pick up and have that kind of determination down the lane.” Southern California-based trainer Bob Baffert nailed down his fourth Matt Winn score after previously winning the 11/16-mile race for 3-year-olds with Shot of Gold (1998), Forestry (1999), and Danthebluegrassman (2002). Baffert believes Code West will factor in this summer’s top 3-year-old races. “He’s the kind of horse that is just getting better and better,” said Baffert, who also secured the 100th Churchill Downs victory. “This was a little short for him. I think he wants to go farther.” Virginia-bred Code West, a ridgling by Lemon Drop Kid, is a full brother to two-time grade II winner Charitable Man. His stakes-winning Saint Ballado dam, Charitabledonation, has produced three other winners including stakes-placed filly Melrose Woods, by Broken Vow. Evans also bred Charitabledonation. Evans campaigned Charitabledonation’s dam, the winning Seeking the Gold mare In the Will. He purchased In the Will for $290,000 at the 1994 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale. Evans died in 2009. Code West was a $340,000 purchase by the Wests’ bloodstock agent Ben Glass from the Evans’ dispersal at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale. Code West is the 25th group or graded stakes winner for Lemon Drop Kid. The 1999 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner and 2000 champion older male stands for $35,000 at Lane’s End near Versailles, Ky. Code West is the fourth stakes winner this season for Lemon Drop Kid, joining Donoharm, Rusty Slipper, and Nutello.—F.A |
