Dr. James Penny Memorial H. Recap
Patience has paid off for Somali Lemonade’s connections. She began her career with a bang: taking her juvenile debut at Belmont Park by 13/4 lengths. She then tackled stakes company and stretching out to 11/16 miles to emerge triumphant by the same margin in the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland. That victory earned her entry into the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IIT).
She finished out of the money in that test, and while she later placed in three further graded stakes events, her solid win in the Dr. James Penny Memorial Handicap (gr. IIIT) July 2 was Somali Lemonade’s first since the Jessamine. But with winning bloodlines like hers, it likely won’t be her last.
The Kentucky homebred Michael Matz–trained filly races for his sister-in-law Caroline A. “Cina” Forgason. The filly is sired by Lemon Drop Kid and is out of the Nureyev mare Chic Corine. Having been unraced, Chic Corine began her breeding career at 4 and has produced seven winners from nine foals to race. Included among her foals are stakes-winning Kris’s Dancer, by Kris S.; graded stakes-placed A.P. Indy mare, Chic Joy; and stakes winner Rasta Farian, a Holy Bull mare.
Chic Corine was bred by Emory A. Hamilton and acquired as a yearling by Hamilton’s mother Helen Groves at the Keeneland July sale in 1993, where the filly was consigned by King Ranch Farm. Groves’ daughter, Forgason, acquired Chic Corine after she was consigned to the Keeneland November breeding stock sale in 2007 where she was consigned by Helen Alexander’s Middlebrook Farm and purchased by agent RBTS.
Second dam Chic Shirine is not only a grade I stakes winner but the producer of graded stakes winners Waldoboro and Tara Roma. The latter produced two stakes winners herself in Cappuchino and grade I winner Serra Lake. Chic Shirine’s daughter, stakes-producing Flying Passage, has foaled multiple stakes winners Hungry Island and Soaring Empire, while another daughter, Enchanted Rock, is the dam of grade I winner Verrazano and grade II winner El Padrino.
Somali Lemonade is the sixth added-money winner this year for Lemon Drop Kid. The stallion is represented by 69 lifetime stakes winners. He stood for the 2013 season at Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky., for a fee of $35,000.—M.P.
