Goldencents may have been overlooked as a yearling, considering his modest sale price, but with two consecutive graded stakes victories under his belt, it’s now the son of Into Mischief’s time to shine. Goldencents, who scored his most recent triumph in the Jan. 5 Sham Stakes (gr. III), brought just $5,500 at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale. Purchased by Webb Carroll, agent, the colt was consigned by Pope McLean, agent. Goldencents was then purchased for $62,000 by Dennis O’Neill at the 2012 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s 2-year-olds and horses of racing age sale from Southern Chase Farm, agent. “He was not a colt that stood out (as a yearling),” said co-breeder Charles Miller. “He really didn’t look the part until he was at that 2-year-old sale. There was nothing negative about him, but you have to remember that Into Mischief was still an unproven, unknown sire.” (For more on Into Mischief, see page 82.) Goldencents, who was the first winner for his sire, was trained in his career debut by Doug O’Neill assistant Leandro Mora for Paul Cohen, Dave Kenney, W.C. Racing, and Robert Master. After that, his ownership group changed to RAP Racing, W.C. Racing, and Kenney. RAP Racing is the stable name for University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino, while W.C. Racing represents Glen Sorgenstein and Josh Kaplan, who also raced grade II winners Enriched and Informed. Kenney owns the California-based trucking transportation dealership Westrux International and is represented by grade I winners Richard’s Kid and Willyconker. Goldencents was bred in Kentucky on a mare-foal arrangement between Charles and Lyra Miller’s Rosecrest Farm and Karyn Pirrello. The latter partner, who boards her mares at Rosecrest near Paris, Ky., provided the services of the stallion Into Mischief. At the time of the mating, the Millers and Pirrello owned Goldencents’ dam Golden Works (by Banker’s Gold) in partnership. Golden Works, who is out of the Bold Ruckus mare Body Works, is the dam of one other winner, the gelding Thunder Command (by Hold That Tiger). Her youngest offspring is a yearling colt by Will He Shine. Into Mischief is the sire of three stakes winners, including Vyjack, who captured the Jerome Stakes (gr. II) the same day Goldencents took the Sham. Into Mischief, a son of Harlan’s Holiday, will stand the 2013 season for $20,000 at B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm near Lexington.—E.M. |
