Santa Anita Sprint Championship S. Recap

After winning three stakes races including the grade III Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes with Bench Points in 2011, it only made sense that many of the partners who campaigned that successful son of Benchmark would return to send out his brother Points Offthebench.

Their faith in family ties has paid off as Points Offthebench, who like his full brother is gelded and campaigned by trainer Tim Yakteen, secured a second straight grade I victory Oct. 5 when he posted a half-length win over Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner Goldencents in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes.

Points Offthebench currently is owned by Donnie Crevier and Charles Martin, who were among the partners who campaigned his older brother.

Points Offthebench is a lightly raced 4-year-old son of Benchmark, who is the sire of three other grade I winners in Brother Derek, Silent Sighs, and Idiot Proof, who won the 2007 edition of the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (then called the Ancient Title Stakes).

Both siblings were bred in California by Gary Rocks. They are the first two starters out of the unraced Free House mare Mo Chuisle. (Mo Chuisle is what the trainer played by Clint Eastwood calls the female boxer played by Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby, the 2004 Academy Award winner for Best Picture.)

Rocks, a former California-based trainer who manages Carl Asadurian’s Asadurian Thoroughbred Horse Ranch, landed Mo Chuisle (carrying Bench Points at the time) for $13,000 at the Barretts October mixed sale. Carl Asadurian campaigned Points Offthebench with Crevier for his first three starts, when Martin joined.

Yakteen said he will send Points Offthebench, his first grade I winner, to the Xpressbet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I).

Points Offthebench is the lone graded stakes winner so far this season for veteran California-based sire Benchmark, who boasts seven other 2013 stakes winners in Marks Mine, Sister Kate, Luscious Lonna, Bench Glory, Maravillosa Marcos, Open Eyed Dream, and Comprometido (Per-II). The leading California-based sire by races won in three of the past four years, 22-year-old Benchmark stood the 2013 season for $5,000 at Ballena Vista Farm in Ramona.—F.A

Bing Crosby S. Recap

A grade I event is a bold choice for a stakes debut, but Points Offthebench has yet to finish out of the money in his seven starts, and the confident sprinter rose to the occasion with an audacious run in the July 28 Bing Crosby Stakes (gr. I) at Del Mar. In the process the 4-year-old gelding secured a post position in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT) at Santa Anita Park in November.

Bred in California by Gary Rocks, Points Offthebench is out of Mo Chuisle, by Free House. Raced in his first two starts for owners Carl Asadurian and Don Crevier, the Tim Yakteen trainee now runs for Crevier and Charles Martin, who joined the partnership in early 2012.

The Bing Crosby triumph improves the dark bay’s record to 5-1-1 from seven starts, and the $180,000 purse winnings bring his earnings total to $364,940.

Unraced, Mo Chuisle is showing success as a broodmare, having produced two graded black-type winners from two starters. Her first foal, gelding Bench Points, is a full brother to the Bing Crosby victor and counts Hollywood Park’s Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes (gr. III) and $309,008 in earnings to his credit. Mo Chuisle’s unraced offspring include Captain Buzz, a 2-year-old Buzzards Bay colt, and a Benchmark weanling colt. She is expecting a foal by the recently deceased Unbridled’s Song (see page 17) in 2014.

Second dam to Points Offthebench, Visible Gold was herself a grade III winner of $353,075 who produced a single runner from her four foals, the grade II-placed Visible Slew, by Seattle Slew. Visible Gold’s dam, the non-winning Fit and Fancy, is a half sister to black-type winner Duns Scotus.

Fit and Fancy produced eight runners apart from Visible Gold, among them Secret Negotiator, who recorded a third in the Illinois Derby (gr. II). Her other offspring were winners in the U.S., England, and Japan. Winning daughters Marron Kiss, Real Fancy, and Regicidal each bore winning offspring of their own.

Points Offthebench is the 38th stakes winner for his sire, Benchmark. A 22-year-old son of Alydar, Benchmark currently stands at Ballena Vista Farm near Ramona, Calif. His stud fee for 2013 was $5,000.—M.P.
