Natalma S. Recap
Quite the multitasker, Llanarmon accomplished three goals in one victory in the Sept. 14 Natalma Stakes (Can-IIT) at Woodbine—she broke her maiden, became a graded stakes winner, and won an automatic entry into the Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filles Turf (gr. IT). All that in a single one-turn, one-mile trip at Woodbine in a mere 1:35.89.
Bred in Ontario by Cavendish Investing, the dark bay or brown Sky Mesa filly is trained by Hall of Famer Roger Attfield and from her record of 1-0-1 from two starts has already banked $146,108 for Richard Bonnycastle’s Harlequin Ranches.
Llanarmon is out of Harlequin Ranches’ homebred Smart Strike mare Gold Strike, a graded stakes winner and Canada’s champion 3-year-old filly of 2005. Llanarmon is the third foal and one of two winners for her dam, whose first foal, a filly by Posse named Lode Lady, was a winner of more than $150,000. Gold Strike is also dam to a yearling colt by Giant’s Causeway and has been bred to Hard Spun for 2014.
Brassy Gold, the Natalma victress’ second dam, is an unraced granddaughter of Dixieland Band, the sire of 117 stakes winners and was ranked among the leading broodmare sires for most of the new century and topped the broodmare sire rankings in 2004. Dixieland Band was also ranked among the leading sires in 1993 and 1999.
Brassy Gold produced three foals, all winners, Gold Strike the only stakes winner among them. One more generation back in Llanarmon’s female family is stakes-winning third dam, Panning for Gold (by Search for Gold). A half sister to stakes-winning Be Gallant (by Gallant Romeo), Panning for Gold’s seven runners were all winners and included stakes-placed winners Pheasant Ridge (an Au Point gelding), Golden Vigor (a colt by Vigors), and Miss Regal Classic (a Regal Classic filly). The latter went on to produce stakes winner Classic Verse, a gelding sired by 1991 Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT) winner Opening Verse.
Sky Mesa, a grade I winner of the Hopeful Stakes, is the sire of 30 stakes winners. A 13-year-old son of Pulpit, Sky Mesa stands at Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky. His fee for 2013 was $25,000.—M.P.
