Falling Sky’s plans for pursuing the Triple Crown trail fell right into place when the son of Lion Heart won the Feb. 2 Sam F. Davis Stakes (gr. III) at Tampa Bay Downs in front-running fashion. Trained by John Terranova II, Falling Sky was making his first start for Newtown Anner Stud, James Covello, and Joseph Bulger. Alone or in partnership, the aforementioned owners are also respectively represented by graded stakes winners More Than Love (gr. III), Lilacs and Lace (gr. I), and Homeboykris (gr. I). A $16,000 weanling, Falling Sky won two of his first three starts as a juvenile for Armachan Stable and Off The Hook, after which he topped the sale at $425,000 when Justin Casse, agent, signed the ticket at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s mixed sale Jan. 15. He was consigned by Off The Hook through Off The Hook, agent. Now a winner at distances ranging from six furlongs to 11/16 miles, Falling Sky has defied the tendencies in his female pedigree to excel exclusively at sprint distances. Falling Sky’s dam, Sea Dragoness, won two sprint races during her career and also placed in two stakes at 51/2 and six furlongs. By Sea Hero, Sea Dragoness is a half sister to All Giving (by Allen’s Prospect) and War Native (by Cherokee Run), both of whom also won sprint stakes. In her fourth time through the auction ring, Sea Dragoness was consigned by Copper Penny Stables, breeder of Falling Sky, through Brookdale Sales, agent, to the 2010 Keeneland November mixed sale. In foal to Dunkirk, she was bought for $9,000 by Jason Hall, agent, on behalf of Mark Hillman. “She was a well-put-together mare,” said Hillman, who keeps Sea Dragoness at his Tangarae Farm near Burlington, Colo. “She’s correct in about every respect, she’s got a nice hip on her, and at that point, she had had one really consistent runner and three winners out of three starters, so she seemed promising and young enough that I thought it was way too early to give up on her.” Sea Dragoness’ other best runner is $180,000-plus earner Hero of the Sea (by Partner’s Hero). The mare, whose youngest offspring is a yearling Notional colt, is booked to Smoke Glacken for 2014. Lion Heart is the sire of 32 stakes winners, including other 2013 added-money victor Touch Magic. Lion Heart stands at The Jockey Club of Turkey Stud Farms, where his 2013 fee will be 12,000 lira ($6,827 in United States funds).—E.M. |
