Eddie Read S. Recap
No stranger to the winner’s circle, Michael Pender–trained Jeranimo counted the 11/8-mile July 20 Eddie Read Stakes (gr. IT) over the Del Mar turf as his 10th victory and second grade I triumph. Among his other graded black-type wins are last year’s Shoemaker Mile Stakes (gr. IT) at Betfair Hollywood Park and two editions of the San Gabriel Stakes (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita Park (2010 and 2013).
The 7-year-old horse was bred in Florida by Brylynn Farm and was sired by multimillionaire and multiple grade I winner Congaree, out of stakes winner Jera. As a yearling, Jeranimo was consigned by On Course Sales, agent, to the August 2007 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s open yearling sale, where he was acquired by Quarter Pole Investments for $50,000. The following year he went through the sales ring again, consigned by Eddie Woods, agent, at the Barretts Equine Limited May sale of 2-year-olds in training and was bought for $70,000 by Rick Taylor, as agent.
Jeranimo debuted at 3, racing for B.J. Wright, who now owns the horse with Robert LaPenta. Including his $180,000 victor’s share of the Eddie Read purse, Jeranimo’s earnings equal $1,400,864. His record of 10-6-5 from 35 starts includes seven stakes wins and seven stakes-placed efforts.
The bay horse is the first black-type winner for Jera, who was sired by Jeblar, a son of Alydar. From her six starters, Jera has also produced two stakes-placed winners in Tizthen, a daughter of Tiznow, and Wealthy Aviator, a gelding sired by Henny Hughes. Her unraced foals are Rhyme Scheme, a juvenile filly by Unbridled’s Song; an unnamed yearling filly by Eskendereya; and an unnamed 2013 weanling filly by Tapit, to whom she was bred back this year.
Jera’s dam is Mavera, by Reviewer, sire of the legendary Ruffian. Mavera foaled 10 winners from 11 starters including Verabald, dam of grade I winner A Huevo; and Frisson, producer of Sky Blue Pink (gr. III) and stakes winner Freddie Frisson, dam of grade I-winning First Samurai. Mavera is the third dam of Contessa Halo who produced three stakes winners: Kantharos (gr. II), Ikigai (gr. III), and Bonifacio.
Jeranimo is the chief earner of 13 stakes winners sired by Congaree, who stands at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds near Saratoga Springs, N.Y. His fee for 2013 was $7,500.—M.P.
