Autumn Miss S. Recap
Glen Hill Farm’s 3-year-old homebred filly Wishing Gate flashed the same brilliance of her multiple graded stakes-winning dam when she notched a victory in the Oct. 26 Autumn Miss Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Santa Anita Park.
It was the second graded black-type score for the Tom Proctor-trained daughter of Indian Charlie, who also took the July 21 San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT) and ran a close second in the Aug. 17 Del Mar Oaks (gr. IT). She owns an overall career slate of 4-3-0 from 10 starts, for earnings of $305,344.
Wishing Gate is out of the Repriced mare Rich in Spirit, another Glen Hill homebred. The Ocala-based operation bought Rich in Spirit’s dam, Qualatative (by Woodman), for $200,000 at the 1996 Keeneland July yearling sale. She was consigned by Tim Hyde, agent, on behalf of Camas Park Stud.
Qualatative had a modest race career, winning once in 10 starts before retiring to the Glen Hill broodmare band.
Rich in Spirit was by far Qualatative’s best foal. During her 26-start career, the mare won three stakes and placed in seven others. Also trained by Proctor, she achieved her biggest victories in the 2005 Regret (gr. IIIT) and the 2006 Locust Grove Handicap (gr. IIIT), both at Churchill Downs. Rich in Spirit retired with a record of 7-5-3 from 26 starts, for earnings of more than $600,000.
Wishing Gate, Rich in Spirit’s second foal, is her sole offspring to race. The 11-year-old mare’s youngest foal is a Candy Ride filly, born April 6. She was not bred for 2014.
“(Wishing Gate) was elegant and always looked more like her mother than Indian Charlie,” said Craig Bernick, who operates Glen Hill on behalf of his grandfather, Leonard Lavin. “Their running styles are similar…Wishing Gate may switch on a little quicker and more brilliantly than her mother.”
Glen Hill has had a banner year in 2013. In addition to Wishing Gate, the farm is represented by Gamely Stakes (gr. IT) winner Marketing Mix and other black-type victors Customer Base, Left a Message, Pontchatrain, and Procurement.
Indian Charlie is the sire of 78 stakes winners. Among his 12 added-money winners of 2013 are other graded victors Liaison (gr. II), Brazen Persuasion (gr. III), Rumor (gr. III), and Something Extra (Can-IIT). Indian Charlie stood at Brereton Jones’ Airdrie Stud until he was euthanized due to complications from cancer in 2011.—E.M.
