It’s noteworthy when a stallion is represented by as many as two stakes winners on a single day but even more so when a broodmare accomplishes that feat. Afleet Summer, an 18-year-old daughter of Afleet, turned the trick Feb. 16 when two of her sons each won a graded stakes. Five-year-old Swift Warrior, by First Samurai, captured the Tampa Bay Stakes (gr. IIIT), and 3-year-old Dice Flavor, by Scat Daddy, triumphed in the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) at Golden Gate Fields. Both trace in male line to major sire Storm Cat. Swift Warrior, who finished third in last year’s Tampa Bay Stakes, began this year with a score in the John B. Connally Turf Cup Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Sam Houston Race Park Jan. 26. “It was a little quick coming back from Houston and this was a tough field, but the horse is doing very good,” said Jason Desilets, assistant to trainer John Terranova II. Swift Warrior, who earned $90,000 in his recent score, improved his career mark to 6-2-7 from 20 starts with earnings of $430,843, of which $320,843 has come on turf. Swift Warrior races for James Covello and James Dolan. In 2011 Covello won the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland with Lilacs and Lace. He raced the filly with her breeders, Judy Hicks and Kathryn Nikkel. The year following her retirement from racing, Afleet Summer was offered for sale at the 1999 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, where she was bought for $31,000 by Jody Huckabay from Cantium Bloodstock, agent for Steve McDonald. Huckabay, owner of Elm Tree Farm near Paris, Ky., purchased her on behalf of his wife and his parents. Afleet Summer produced several foals including stakes winner Carolina Sky (by Sky Classic) before Elm Tree as agent sold her for $200,000 to Sense Bloodstock at the 2007 Keeneland November breeding stock sale while she was carrying Swift Warrior. Both Swift Warrior and Dice Flavor were bred in Kentucky by Paget Bloodstock in partnership with Nearctic Bloodstock and Carhue Investments. Carolina Sky, a three-time stakes winner, is a broodmare at Elm Tree. Her youngest foal is a Lookin At Lucky yearling colt bred by Huckabay and partners. First Samurai has sired 13 stakes winners including 2013 added-money winner Last Gunfighter and 2012 multiple grade I winner Executiveprivilege. First Samurai stands at the Hancock family’s Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky. His 2013 fee is $10,000.—D.S. |

es win. The 5-year-old son of First Samurai was hardly threatened while setting the pace on his way to a 23/4-length score in the John B. Connally Turf Cup Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Sam Houston Race Park Jan. 26. It was just the third time in 17 runnings of the stakes that a front-runner emerged victorious. “I thought he might end up on the lead,” said trainer John Terranova II. “On paper it didn’t look like there would be a strong pace to run at. This horse is very versatile. He’s a really neat horse. He’s always been a barn favorite.” Swift Warrior raced the first part of his career for trainer Steve Dwoskin and since early 2011 for the partnership of James Covello and James Dolan. For Dwoskin, he won twice and finished third in the 2011 Tropical Park Derby. For Covello and Dolan, he won the Rushaway Stakes in 2011 and the restricted Win Stakes at Saratoga in 2012 and was graded stakes-placed. Bred in Kentucky by Paget Bloodstock, Nearctic Bloodstock, and Carhue Investments, Swift Warrior went through the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale but failed to reach his reserve and was bought back for $80,000. At the 2012 Keeneland September sale, his half sister by Giant’s Causeway sold for $310,000 to Sallusto and Albina, agents. On its own behalf, Paget Bloodstock is the breeder of several stakes winners including Santiva, who at 2 won the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) and ran second in the Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity (gr. I). Out of the Afleet mare Afleet Summer, Swift Warrior is a half brother to earlier stakes winner Carolina Sky. Afleet Summer’s two youngest foals are by Ashford Stud stallion Giant’s Causeway, who is the sire of First Samurai. First Samurai has sired 13 stakes winners including other 2013 added-money winner Last Gunfighter. His 2012 stakes winners include Executiveprivilege, who finished second in Eclipse Award balloting for best 2-year-old filly. First Samurai stands at Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky. His 2013 fee is $10,000.—D.S. |
