Ohio Derby Recap
In his third graded stakes effort Title Contender finally saw the winner’s circle in the July 27 Ohio Derby (gr. III) at Thistledown. Putting pressure on pacesetter Mongolian Saturday, the 3-year-old gelding made a game effort under urging and pulled ahead to the wire with a one-length win in the 11/16 dirt test. The dark bay had been winless since capturing his maiden in September 2012 in a one-mile maiden special weight at Santa Anita Park. His best efforts this year came in optional claiming events with a runner-up finish at Oaklawn Park in February and a third last time out in June at Churchill Downs.
A son of the late Pulpit, Title Contender was bred in Kentucky by Town & Country Farm out of the graded stakes-winning mare Winter Garden, by Roy. Through the sales ring as a weanling, Title Contender was consigned to the 2010 Keeneland November breeding stock sale where he was acquired for $310,000 by Ben Glass, as agent. Trained in his first five starts by Bob Baffert, Wayne Catalano has since conditioned Gary and Mary West’s Title Contender, who has so far banked $114,842 from his 2-1-2 record from nine starts.
Winter Garden has to date produced three winners from three starters, Title Contender being her only black-type victor. Not yet started are Turn On the Tap, a 2-year-old Tapit colt who commanded $625,000 at the Fasig-Tipton 2-year-olds in training sale in March; and an unnamed yearling who is a full brother to the Ohio Derby winner. Winter Garden had no reported foal in 2013 but was bred this year to Malibu Moon.
Winter Garden was the only black-type winner for her dam Hillsburgh Rumors, by Bold Ruckus. But Hillsburgh Rumors’ dam, Phoenix Factor, was a champion 2-year-old filly in Canada and a black-type winner. She produced seven winners, including stakes-placed daughter Midnightontheoasis, by Gulch, who was dam to black-type-winning daughters Tejano’s Oasis and Sunriseontheoasis; and stakes-placed gelding Cycloneontheoasis. Afleet One, also a winning daughter of Phoenix Factor, produced Afleet Buck, a gelding black-type winner of almost half a million dollars.
Pulpit raced as a homebred for Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky. He retired to stud there in 1998 and stood there until his death in December 2012. He has sired 70 stakes winners.—M.P
