Mike Pegram’s reach was all over Sunland Park’s two major stakes March 24. An Arizona resident, Pegram captured the Sunland Derby (gr. III) with homebred Govenor Charlie and won the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks with Midnight Lucky. Both wins came in track-record time. Pegram races Midnight Lucky with Karl Watson and Paul Weitman. Pegram’s association with the Sunland Derby winner and the Oaks winner didn’t end there. Pegram, in partnership with Watson and Weitman, raced Midnight Lute, sire of Govenor Charlie and Midnight Lucky. Pegram also campaigned Govenor Charlie’s second dam, 2009 Hall of Fame inductee Silverbulletday. Pegram was experiencing a solid year before his March 24 bonanza. In partnership, he had won graded stakes at Santa Anita with Coil, Fiftyshadesofhay, and Shakin It Up, who is bred similarly to Govenor Charlie. Three-year-old Shakin It Up, winner of the San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) and fourth in the Sunland Derby, is by Midnight Lute out of Silverbulletday’s daughter, Silver Bullet Moon. In addition to being by Midnight Lute, Govenor Charlie and Midnight Lucky are out of mares tracing in male line to Northern Dancer. Govenor Charlie is out of a Storm Cat mare, and Midnight Lucky is out of a Citidancer mare. Trained by Bob Baffert, Govenor Charlie is the second stakes winner out of unraced Silverbulletway. The mare’s first foal, Crisis of Spirit (by Vindication), won the 2009 Anoakia Stakes at Oak Tree at Santa Anita. Govenor Charlie traces in female family to Paul Mellon’s blue hen All Beautiful. The fifth dam of Govenor Charlie, All Beautiful remains best known as the dam of Mellon’s Hall of Famer Arts and Letters. By Ribot, Arts and Letters won the 1969 Belmont Stakes after running second in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Arts and Letters was named Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male. Silverbulletway and Silverbulletday are boarded at John Sikura’s Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms near Lexington, where Midnight Lute stands. Silverbulletway produced a Lookin At Lucky colt March 21 and is booked to Midnight Lute. Trained by Baffert, Lookin At Lucky won the 2010 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and was champion 3-year-old male for Pegram, Watson, and Weitman. Silverbulletday is in foal to Hill ‘n’ Dale stallion Misremembered and is due in April. She is booked to Midnight Lute. Midnight Lute, a champion sprinter and a two-time Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner, has sired four stakes winners from his first crop. His fee at Hill ‘n’ Dale is $15,000.—D.S. |
