Potrero Grande S. Recap

The connections of Jimmy Creed experienced a stellar afternoon April 6 when two of their horses won graded stakes on the same card at Santa Anita Park. First, Beholder captured the Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I), after which Jimmy Creed scored in the Potrero Grande Stakes (gr. II) off a three-and-a-half-month layoff.

Both horses are trained by Richard Mandella for B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm and were ridden to victory by jockey Garrett Gomez.

In his last start Jimmy Creed captured the Dec. 26 Malibu Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita. The 4-year-old son of Distorted Humor now holds a record of 4-2-1 from eight starts, for earnings of $403,000.

Hughes, who owns Spendthrift Farm near Lexington, is hopeful the spring will bring more added-money glory to Jimmy Creed.

“The horse is a good horse,” said Hughes. “I think we’re going to try the Met Mile (gr. I at Belmont Park, May 27).”

Hughes purchased Jimmy Creed for $900,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale. The colt was consigned by his breeder, Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, through Gainesway, agent.

Lucky for Mandella and Hughes, Jimmy Creed has been able to emulate the talents of his dam, the Citidancer mare Hookedonthefeelin, who scored her biggest victories in the 1999 La Brea Stakes (gr. I) and 1998 Landaluce Stakes (gr. II).

Campaigned throughout her career by Mike Pegram, Hookedonthefeelin was most recently purchased for $2.9 million by Stonestreet at the 2006 Keeneland November mixed sale. Consigned by ClassicStar Dispersal through Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, she was carrying Jimmy Creed’s stakes-winning full sister Funny Feeling.

Hookedonthefeelin has experienced considerable success as a broodmare. The mare, who also brought $1.525 million at the 2002 Keeneland November mixed sale, has now produced four stakes performers, including her first-born, multiple grade I winner Pussycat Doll.

On the track, the daughter of Real Quiet scored in the grade I Humana Distaff Stakes, La Brea Stakes, and Santa Monica Handicap. At auction, she fetched $2.3 million from Lael Stable through Nicoma, agent, at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed sale from Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent.

Pussycat Doll delivered her fourth foal, a Giant’s Causeway colt, Feb. 15.

Hookedonthefeelin, who is out of stakes winner Prospective Joy (by Allen’s Prospect), died in November due to hemorrhaging.

Distorted Humor is the sire of 114 stakes winners, including other 2013 added-money victors Cheery and Slow Pace (in France). Distorted Humor stands for $100,000 at Kenny Troutt’s WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky.—E.M
